Chairman’s Statement

The past few months have been challenging. Almost every industry and country has been touched by the recent financial crisis and ensuing economic downturn. Aleris is no exception.

As metal markets tumbled and our customers saw their businesses slow dramatically, Aleris also was affected. In February 2009 Aleris filed for Chapter 11. Since that time, we have taken bold, precise steps to get our business right sized for the economy we face today, and initiated programs to make us more responsive to future challenges.

Throughout this time our customers supported us, demonstrating a loyalty that makes us both appreciative and proud. Our people in our factories and offices around the world remained steady and determined. As a result, we are convinced that we will not only weather this storm, but come out of it even stronger.

There has also been good news floating throughout our hallways. Relationships between Aleris, its suppliers, and its customers have tightened. New business practices are making us a better company and helping our customers thrive in this new economy. Aleris safety initiatives reduced lost time accidents by 74 percent over the past five years. We have become one of the largest recyclers of aluminum in the world. And energy consumption within our Aleris facilities has been reduced by more than 14 percent.

True, the road ahead will be challenging. And a full economic recovery will not be quick or easy. Nevertheless, Aleris is positioned to rise to new challenges and take advantage of new opportunities. We will make a new future – our own future.
